Hartford Police Bomb Squad
The Hartford Police Bomb Squad is comprised of members from the Hartford Police Department, East Hartford Police Department and West Hartford. The bomb squad responds throughout the Capital Region. The Hartford Bomb Squad is one of four accredited bomb squads in the State of Connecticut.
Members of the bomb squad are certified bomb technicians through the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The members go through monthly training which includes Hazardous Materials training along with other bomb detection and disposal techniques. All of the members have been trained as Hazardous Materials Technicians. They are also trained in investigating and rendering safe suspicious packages, military ordinances, improvised explosive devises, and packages which may contain a chemical or biological agent, radio active or nuclear agents, AKA Weapons of Mass Destruction.
The bomb squad has fully operational robots with x-ray capabilities, three response trucks to carry personnel and equipment, and a bomb well; which transports "suspicious devices" to a disposal range.
The bomb squad also has Explosive Detection K-9's, a which were obtained through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The K-9's are Yellow Labs trained to detect high and low explosives.
In addition to responding to WMD threats, the Hartford Bomb Squad conducts dignitary protection details and preventative security at public events.
