ARREST MADE IN EARLY MORNING STABBING
(Hartford) - Detectives of the Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes Division have made an arrest in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred in the vicinity of 19 Standish Street on Sunday, March 6, 2011.
Charged with the stabbing death of Carmelo Calderon, 48, of 19 Standish Street, is Luis Daniel Garcia, 31, of 111 Franklin Avenue, Hartford. Garcia, who turned himself at Hartford Police Headquarters earlier today, is charged with one count of manslaughter in the first degree and one count of third degree larceny. He remains in custody on a $1.2 million bond.
At approximately 5:25 a.m., on Sunday, March 6, 2011, officers responded to the area of 19 Standish Street on a report of a stabbing incident. On arrival officers located the victim, Carmelo Calderon, suffering from stab wounds. He was immediately transported to Hartford Hospital where he was pronounced deceased by emergency room personnel at 6:04 a.m.
In commenting on the incident and arrest, Hartford Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts, said, "It is a tragedy that these individuals, known to each other, found it necessary to resort to violence to revolve their conflict. Two lives, and the lives of their loved ones, are changed forever. My sympathy goes out to their families on their loss."
