MAYOR AND POLICE CHIEF APPLAUD SUCCESSFUL PROSECUTION OF MAJOR DRUG DEALER

 ---JOINT NEWS AND COMMUNITY RELEASE---

(Hartford) – Today, Mayor Pedro E. Segarra and Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts applauded the successful federal prosecution of Edwin Maldonado of Wethersfield, a target of the Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Gang Task Force for dealing Heroin in the City of Hartford.

Maldonado, AKA “Chunk”, was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court b y Judge Ellen Bree Burns to seven years in prison for distributing Heroin in Hartford.

“Let this be a strong and clear message to those involved in drug trafficking in the City of Hartford that their actions will not be tolerated and that they will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Hartford Mayor Pedro E. Segarra.  “I want to thank the FBI, Connecticut State Police, Hartford Police Department and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, members of the Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force, for their extensive and collaborative investigative work, which has resulted in the removal of Maldonado, a menace to our community, from our streets.  He is now being held accountable for his actions.”

Hartford Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts said, “It is multi agency, on-going collaborative investigations such as this that have a major impact on the safety of our streets and quality of life in our neighborhoods.  I applaud the work of the HPD’s Vice and Narcotics, Intelligence and Major Crimes Divisions, in partnership with the FBI, Connecticut State Police and DEA, for this successful investigation.   This collaboration will remain on-going.”

The Northern Connecticut Violent Crime Gang Task Force has been investigating street gangs engaging in criminal activity in Hartford’s Upper Albany and Northeast neighborhoods for the past fifteen months.  Their efforts remain ongoing.
